The Vedas state : ahara-saddhau sattva-suddhih, "If one's food is pure, one's whole existence is pure." In Chapter 17 of the Bhagavad-gita, Lord Krishna explains that all material activities performed by us belong to one of the three modes of Nature: goodness, passion and ignorance. While activities performed in the mode of goodness are conducive to spiritual advancement, that in the mode of ignorance leads to darkness. In verses 7-10, Sri Krishna explains that even the food which we eat also belongs to one of these modes, and results in the corresponding auspicious or inauspicious effects.
